The family firm of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company was established in 1802 and during the 19th century it became one of the United States' most important manufacturers of black powder. Elisha Copeland, Jr., was a commission merchant and later city auditor of Boston, Mass. He was associated with a more notable merchant, P. P. F. Degrand, with whom he shared an establishment at 69 Broad Street. However, contemporary directories do not indicate a formal partnership.
